Halogen torchiere floor lamps, freestanding lamps with open, shallow bowl tops that provide indirect “up lighting,” have become increasingly popular since their introduction in the United States in 1983. These lamps use halogen tubular bulbs, which get much hotter than standard light bulbs. Since the tops are open, flammable items such as curtains can easily ignite through direct contact with the halogen bulb.
Most regular torchiere floor lamps use halogen bulbs that burn at temperatures exceeding 1,200 degrees hot enough to fry an egg in 30 seconds! This is well above the combustion temperatures for paper, wood and fabric, which range from 350-500 degrees F. The Consumer Products Safety Commission has attributed at least 31 deaths, 114 injuries and at least 350 fires resulting in $2 million in property damage to these lamps.
But Energy Star labeled torchiere floor lamps use compact fluorescent bulbs that burn much cooler, last 5 times longer and use 80% less energy. For example, an Energy Star torchiere uses a 56-watt fluorescent bulb, which gives the same amount of light as a 300-watt halogen bulb. Hardwood floors make a beautiful, elegant addition to your home. They are lovely and lend a graceful ambience to any room. Unfortunately, many people don’t take care of their hardwood floors like they should. With some precautionary care, your hardwood floors will remain beautiful well into old age.
Sunlight
If your floor is exposed to sun during the day, invest in sheer curtains, drapes, or blinds that will limit sunlight as UV rays can damage hardwood floors over time.
Furniture
Furniture glides are a great investment for your hardwood floor. They are small coverings, usually made of felt or another soft material, that are placed under the feet of furniture to prevent scratches. To ensure that dust and grit don’t get imbedded, clean the glides regularly. When moving furniture, always lift it up. You should never slide furniture on a hardwood floor, even with glides. If the piece is too heavy to lift, place a cotton sock over the leg and slide it carefully.

Decorating any home, apartment or office space is no easy task, especially if you have an eye for detail. It is even harder to decorate well when you realize how much it matters to decorate your space in ways that reflect you. I have recently been busy redecorating my office. It was very important for me that my office reflect who I am and that it be a comfortable environment for writing in. I chose, after much deliberation, to go with a Japanese art theme for my office.
I have always loved Japanese art, but it seems to be getting more popular and hence more widely available in the past few years. There is something about the look and feel of Japanese art that I love, so I figured it would be an excellent way to decorate a special space that I use for doing endless hours of valuable writing. I knew that I needed to be intentional about the way I decorated my office. I am very aware of my environment and so I know that I need to decorate and create my work environment with care. I write much better when I am inspired by my surroundings, and I know that Japanese art is very inspiring.

Laminate flooring gives your floor that overall look of wood that can be enjoyed for years to come. The best thing about laminate flooring is the ease in care that you have when you have it in your home. Laminate flooring is one that will look like wood, and that will feel like wood but often times is a bi product of wood. Real wood will require waxing and cleaning every year to keep the floor shiny. Real wood flooring is going to be sanded down and varnished again as the shine is worn off the flooring. Laminate flooring is going to require no waxing, no sanding and the wear and tear on the flooring is something that is not going to happen in the manner that the coating on other wood flooring will have.
Laminate flooring can be cared for by using a dry dust mop on the floor for every day cleaning. During those times when you feel that you need a good deeper clean, you can use a wet mop, one that is not really all that wet, to clean up sticky messes or to clean up mud from the floor. You don’t want to use that much water on the floor so you don’t have the water seeping down into the laminate flooring and then the laminate flooring is going to warp over time.
